Thiruvananthapuram & Kovalam

Beaches, textiles and palaces

Thiruvananthapuram is the political capital of Kerala. The Tamil traditions are strong which means that there are some very nice pure veg restaurants in the city. The worlds wealthiest temple, Padmanabhaswamy Temple, is located in the city. South of Thiruvananthapuram is the beach area Kovalam which was the first location for beach tourism in Kerala, and as such it is well organised, but also slightly up-market. Kanyakumari further south, across the border in Tamil Nadu, is where three oceans meet. It is also a holy place for Hindus.

Recommended activities: Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Napier Museum, Kovalam Beach, Padmanabhapuram Palace, Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari Beach, Thanumalayan Temple
